Do the two buildings have a common wall? In the old mills, there were
several "buildings" but they shared one or more common walls. They
would assign a building number for every addition. If someone added
5000 square feet to a 40,000 square foot building and called the
addition "building #2", I would assume that it would still be OK to
feed the new sprinklers from the existing system.

Back when I was a young man I did a lot of work in some very old
industrial complexes. . this is when pipe sch was the rule. We often
would run an express feed to a new or unsprinklered building if it
cost less than connecting to the yard main. I don't see any issue
with that. These were all FM jobs and they (FM) approved the
drawings, back then the fire department had little to do with
sprinklers. We did mark the riser with a sign that identified the
building the valve controlled.
All of the property was controlled by one owner. . .who know what
issues would arise if the property was split up and sold off. . .
something I am sure has happened.
