Subject: RE: Arm over Calculations

The typical scenario I see with this is where we have a shell office or
retail space. The shell space is typically designed for 1500+ sq ft. Then,
when you drop in a ceiling, you often have the QR reduction that comes into
play for a reduced design area of 900 sq ft. Now, with the arm overs and
such, I have not seen it throw off a calc when you are reducing the design
area by 600 sq ft. I am not saying that it can't happen, but just that I
have never seen it. However, if you did the shell with the QR reductions,
then you may be at a point where the extra arm overs and such do create a
problem for the calculated systems.

Also, if you are using some of the newer calc programs, it is pretty simple
to slap a remote area on the system and get it calc'd in a matter of a few
minutes. You can then prove the point that it really is not an issue.

Regardless off what one's interpretation of NFPA 13 is, the inescapable fact
is that adding arm overs (two elbows = 10+ feet of 1 in. pipe by
themselves) will throw the original calculations significantly off.
