Craig,

Are you sure about the importance factor (Ip) being 1.0? In most of the work I've seen regarding fire sprinkler systems that value is 1.5.

Also, what does the latest edition of NFPA-15 say? I'm just jumping to the conclusion of course that it's a fixed waterspray system.

Interesting to be sure.

I have a tank farm with deluge sprinkler protection on the vessels,
steel pipe rack and supporting steel. The debate that has arisen is
whether this type of arrangement really needs to be seismically braced.
The issue is that it is not a structure, and not occupied. However the
materials within the tanks are flammable/combustible.
Now to what degree of seismic resistance the structural steel and tank
supports are designed to is unknown.
Is there an exemption for this type of installation? Based on the
information provided by structural, the occupied buildings would be
braced, no question there. But for exterior vessels, that is the
question.
Soil Site Class = D
Occ. Class. = I
Seis. Des. Cat. = D
Structure Ip = 1.0 but might be argued to be 1.25 (Occ. Class II)
