Structure? Are the pipe racks verticals not fire proofed. The pipe racks
I have seen have supports every 20-25 feet so we used u-bolts or
something similar. Vessels usually require pipe stands bolted to
concrete pads or on separate concrete piers. For larger vessels we would
attach to the exterior frame with rigid attachments and use maybe 18"
standoffs to get the nozzle away from the vessel to achieve as much
coverage as possible. Do the vessels have a structure around them?

Subject: Seismic bracing of sprinkler pipng in exterior tank farm

I have a tank farm with deluge sprinkler protection on the vessels,
steel pipe rack and supporting steel. The debate that has arisen is
whether this type of arrangement really needs to be seismically braced.
The issue is that it is not a structure, and not occupied. However the
materials within the tanks are flammable/combustible.

Now to what degree of seismic resistance the structural steel and tank
supports are designed to is unknown.

Is there an exemption for this type of installation? Based on the
information provided by structural, the occupied buildings would be
braced, no question there. But for exterior vessels, that is the
question.

Soil Site Class = D
Occ. Class. = I
Seis. Des. Cat. = D
Structure Ip = 1.0 but might be argued to be 1.25 (Occ. Class II)
