Mike:

A couple of things jump right to mind.
1. What is the purveyors backflow policy? (If they require RPZ protection on
all Fire Sprinkler systems with anything but water, you'll end up replacing
your double check with an RPZ.) (If they only require protection for
non-water additatives, you install an RPZ for the AF heads.)
2. Does the Purveyor own the DCBFP? (Most water authorities require
protection of their water supply, but it is the owners responsibility to
provide that protection. The owner owns maintains and services the backflow,
to protect the water system of the purveyor.)(If you install a RPZ for the
AF heads off the existing Main, you've met all requirements of the Safe
Drinking Water act 1974, and national primary drinking water regulations.)
3. Dose you water authority, have an "Installation Standard" or
"Installation Guidelines" or "Standard for Backflow Prevention", or a formal
"Backflow Policy"?
(I'd read these all very carefully, and if it doesn't match what your being
told, somebody is making it up as they go, and needs to be stopped.) (Or as
Geo. Would say "Just Say NO!")

Subject: RE: Backflow device and steel pipe

Well forumites, I've gat a new one (to me).

Customer wants a small anti-freeze system on a loading dock. The existing
system is a steel pipe system with a double check backflow at the service
entry.

Normally I would just tap into the closest main (5 feet away), drop down to
a reduced pressure backflow and install an expansion tank and the eight head
anti-freeze system.

The water purveyor now tells me that is unacceptable. They want the
anti-freeze system tied into the ductile iron pipe at the service entrance,
before the existing double check, and fed with non ferrous pipe. They say
they do not want any type of backflow device fed with black steel pipe.

This, I believe, is not a code issue.

Has anyone run into this situation before?

Thanks in advance,

 Mike Wisneski
