The 4 times rule is for e/c heads. Std. heads is 3 times and max. 24" from
obstruction. So, if head is placed minimum 24" away (assuming std head),
it's okay. (Although doesn't make sense if the obstruction is, say 5 feet
wide. As always, some common sense has to be applied, when using some
requirements of NFPA)

Subject: Sprinkler Pattern Obstructions

Forum,
I know I must be reading this wrong but as usual I am in a hurry and could
use some help. NFPA-13 (2007) 8.8.5.2.1.3 states that the sprinkler shall be
positioned a minimum of 4 times the maximum dimension of the obstruction,
but then it goes on to say a maximum of 36" clear space. In my case I have a
24" column I'm trying to avoid which by the 4 times rule would get me 8'
away, how does the max. 36" clear come into play? Also look at Figure
8.8.5.2.1.3, I'm so confused ........

Regards,
