I would call the afsa or Nfsa for an informal opinion. Then you would have it in writing. Forest Wilson cherokee fire. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

It is regarding NFPA 13, 2002, table 8.3.2.5(c). Are the distances given relate to a particular direction (such as horizontal) or are they the nearest distances (at any angle)? What is the opinion of the forum? NFPA 13 requires std. temp head to be minimum 18" and int. temp head minimum 9" from hot air flues. (1) Hot air flue and fireplace flue should be pretty much the same heat source? (2) Distances given in NFPA does not specify the orientation (horizontal, vertical). I would say horizontal. But to exaggerate, if the head is say 15 feet directly above, it shouldn't be a problem. So is it the distance regardless of the orientation? (3) Nothing given for high temp heads (that I know of). Is it reasonable to keep the head 3 feet directly above the flue, but change the head to high temp.? The system is a dry pipe system with standard heads.
