Yes there comes a time to file a complaint! But if they exhibit even a casual interest in bettering their understanding and knowledge of fire protection, there are resources available to them. AFSA's on-line learning programs are an excellent choice! Some forum members have supported the start of a new school for fire protection design, that will start next Aug. for those of you in the mid west. (See www.sprinkleracademy.com) I believe the University of MD has an on-line learning system as well. The opportunities exist for those that understand their own limitations or lack of knowledge, and want to improve. For those that are too stubborn, CALL THE COPS!! (Engineering boards)

You will find that most FPE's don't know the difference between sprinklers or fittings but are an authority in fire protection. Interestingly, some that I know cannot tell the sizes of pipe without measuring it. Most fire protection engineers could not design and draw a real sprinkler system if their life depended on it. This is really apparent in the fire alarm industry. It is a shame and the reason that most of the specifications are tossed. Somewhere and somehow, we all need to meet each others needs. This is the only way to clean up this industry.
