Very good question Travis. I will have to look into this. I thought that
chapter 21 was simply a compilation of sprinkler requirements from other
standards. I am having a hard time thinking that just because it has
been brought to 13 it can add exemptions. What about before we had
chapter 13 in 02 Or chapter 21 in 07 Edition? 101 probably had that
exception but because it wasn't compiled in 13 it didn't apply but now
it does? Doesn't seem right to me. I appreciate the question as I have
never considered this and am certainly sprinklering these closets right
now. I would like to hear from more forumites on this and if there isn't
a consensus I will ask for a formal interpretation.

Subject: RE: small closets NFPA 13

We have a large home here that will have a sprinkler system installed in
accordance with the requirements of NFPA 13. Just to show you the size
and
magnitude of the home, it will have a full size indoor squash court..
Among
other things!

The look of a sprinkler on the ceiling or wall with a head guard is not
exactly appealing to the architect. Concealed sprinklers through the
rest
of the home, but the concealed cover plate would still be prone to
damage.

Has anyone dealt with sprinklers in a squash court in some fashion or
architecturally pleasing design?

Thanks

Travis,

I would agree. I see where everything under section 21.20 is bringing in

the language from the Life Safety Code.

Cliff,

I know that you were asking about 13R closets the other day; apparently

101 was what we were thinking about when we wanted to add sprinklers

when it included the water heaters.

Subject: small closets NFPA 13

Per NFPA 13, 2007:

21.20.19.2 Installation Requirements.

21.20.19.2.1 In buildings sprinklered in accordance with NFPA 13,

closets

less than 12 ft2 (1.1 m2) in area in individual dwelling units shall not

be

required to be sprinklered. Closets that contain equipment such as

washers,

dryers, furnaces, or water heaters shall be sprinklered regardless of

size.

[101:30.3.5.4]

Previously, in areas where I have done work that did not recognize the

Life

Safety Code, we could not use this wording to eliminate sprinklers in

small

closets in apartment buildings. Basically, NFPA 13 said it could only

be

eliminated in hotels / motels:

8.15.8.2* Closets and Pantries. Sprinklers are not required in clothes

closets, linen closets, and pantries within dwelling units in hotels and

motels where the area of the space does not exceed 24 ft2 (2.2 m2), the

least dimension does not exceed 3 ft (0.9 m), and the walls and ceilings

are

surfaced with noncombustible or limited-combustible materials.

So, even if the LSC is not recognized in an area, can you still take the

exception noted above in Chap 21 and eliminate sprinklers in small

closets

since it is now part of the body of NFPA 13?

Please feel free to call if you have any questions or comments.
