Allan,

To the contrary the contractor had no objection and was also the sprinkler
designer. As for variances (variations in NJ) their purpose is to allow
alternates that provide the same level of performance as that prescribed by
the code, i.e. the compartment must still be provided with fire suppression.
It's important to keep that in mind as a variation is not an acceptable
mechanism to reduce that required by the building code. This is especially
important in buildings where credits and reductions have been taken for fire
sprinklers conforming to that which the building code prescribes.

Sincerely
John Drucker

Subject: Re: Indoor Squash court

Sooner or later this squash court is going to be an a-wash court. I
would bet the contractor installed the sprinkler under protest and
added squash balls to his not responsible for no heat clause. If that
sprinkler has to stay then a cage needs to be fitted for it and house
scoring rules need to be created for when the ball hits it. There are
reasons why you wear eye protection in this game where part of the
play is to whack the ball as hard as you possibly can with a 30 inch
long energy rebounding device. I think institutional sprinklers put
the fusible link right out in front. It is not even behind a
deflector. My limited experience with squash courts was to ask for a
variance. That was not for a residence where the room might be more
likely used for other purposes.
