Had this happen to my station once. Ambulance burned. The only reason we didn't lose more than that was 1. The cable guy working out front noticed the smoke in the early stages and 2. It was a after a drill and one of the fire trucks was fully staffed at the local Perkins ~ 1 mile away. Had they not been there probably would have been another 10 minutes waiting for help from our friends. Ambulance was a total loss, had to repaint the entire building and re-carpet but not much more.
Unfortunately, these things are far more common than you know. Food on stove is common enough in paid houses 'cuz they run out for a call and forget to turn the stove off. I can think of fire stations in MN that have a fire every couple years. We're not a big place. And I'm sure I don't know the half of it. Chris Cahill, P.E.
