George, Like those that insist on overload protection of fire pump motors, yea we saved the motor, buildings gone however.
I'm proud to say that after pushing for 20+ years my fire company saw the light and spent around $ 85K to fully suppress our firehouse. Now they speak of how it was a wise investment after thinking about the millions of dollars of fire apparatus, loss of the station and with it fire service to the community. Understand during the PA IRC hearings, a home builder who's a rural fire chief noted that since it takes them 15 to 20 minutes to get to a fire, sprinklers activated would continue to spray water on the assumably-suppressed fire, causing water damage! Sure, delayed FD response and resultant excessive water damage would be top of my list of why I'd let my house burn down instead of risking having to dry things out..... almost went home and shut mine off right after the hearings..... glc -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Chris Cahill Sent: Monday, May 18, 2009 10:28 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Fire Service College Fire: All 11 appliances lost Had this happen to my station once. Ambulance burned. The only reason we didn't lose more than that was 1. The cable guy working out front noticed the smoke in the early stages and 2. It was a after a drill and one of the fire trucks was fully staffed at the local Perkins ~ 1 mile away. Had they not been there probably would have been another 10 minutes waiting for help from our friends. Ambulance was a total loss, had to repaint the entire building and re-carpet but not much more. Unfortunately, these things are far more common than you know. Food on stove is common enough in paid houses 'cuz they run out for a call and forget to turn the stove off. I can think of fire stations in MN that have a fire every couple years. We're not a big place. And I'm sure I don't know the half of it. Chris Cahill, P.E. The FSC is government-owned and is the UK's principle fire training centre. The fire destroyed (I am told) all of the colleges fire trucks.
