It's going to be schedule 40 black steel pipe, threaded. Not modular; it's
site-built.

That was one concern was environment issues. I just don't know the answer.

It's going to be in a IBC/IFC 2006 code adopted state.

Subject: RE: Diesel fire pump - fuel supply and return lines

Look at NFPA 31 for more info on piping. NFPA 20 references it in the
appendix as an alternate source. Burying it isn't prohibited as long as the
proper materials are used. No mention of encasing it. The questions that
come to mind are; what piping materials were used, what are the
environmental regulations concerning encasement of fuel transporting lines.

Typically with pre-fabbed pump houses the lines are run along the floor and
anchored. This is typical for site built as well.

Subject: Fuel supply and return lines for diesel fire pump.

I'm looking at a project where the fuel supply and returns lines were put
into a shallow trench and routed from the fuel tank to the engine. They then
grouted the whole trench to make it level with the floor. So now the fuel
lines are inaccessible except at the two ends. Is this a common practice? It
is allowed by NFPA 20? NFPA 20 does not specifically address this type of
scenario that I can find.

I think I'd like to have the lines accessible. Maybe putting checkered plate
over the trench but without something to justify it the project is going to
want to duplicate the existing condition.
