At least the few I have been involved with are designed for fire safety in mind with truck shows or boats...Some don't even have sprinklers above the main display area especially when over 200'. So very large fires are anticipated and people are dealt with safely. For example no one is allowed above the main concourse when there is a combustible show on the event floor. The structure is not in jeopardy. If all this applies to Todd's case then great, sprinklers don't matter. Older convention centers yeah they probably are OHII but that doesn't make it the right density.
I'd play it IMHO it is EXII over the area and leave the final decision up to the AHJ and owner. As long as you are on record you should be safer if anything goes wrong. Chris Cahill, P.E.
