Roland,
If I am understanding you correctly, for composite wood joists, you can
use SSU/SSP or specifically listed sprinkler like the CC2 or Coin (per
NFPA 13 07ed).

multiple parameters are required in order for the requirement for listed
sprinklers to apply.  Obviously must be a concealed space no more than
36 inches from deck to deck but specifically must have a combustible
upper surface with wood trusses or solid wood joist and be horizontal.
ALL OF THOSE PARAMETERS must be in place.  The really interesting part
is that if it contains composite wood joists and one elects to use a
listed sprinkler (since they work better in since narrow spaces),
8.15.1.7 allows their use without applying the listing requirement for
the channels to be filled with insulation.
