Unless I've missed something, only for H-5 occupancies is there anything even
remotely in the IBC that resembles the direction of a design criteria. (Table
903.2.4.2)

"H" occupancies run the gamut of hazards so each one has to be looked at
closely to determine the proper fire protection system and coverage. Those
determinations can comes from various NFPA standards, not just NFPA 13
depending on the hazard and conditions.

Just because it's an "H" doesn't mean it will automatically be a heavy duty
system. I've had "H" occupancies with nothing more than OH1 due to the "H"
being attributed to toxics. Limited to negligible combustibles in the area, no
greater density was warranted.

Containment is not only limited to "H".

The IBC has fire sprinkler requirements in it for H buildings that exceed
the requirements of NFPA (similar to dry heads on a deck in a 13R scenario),
they are hard to find in that book, but they are there, not to mention
containment issues an H building requires for sprinkler systems in an H
occupancy.

"H" is not related to the sprinkler system design. That's a possible
building code occupancy classification.

I did one of these years ago for a major bathroom fixture mfgr. There are
multiple hazards which can be present, all of which may need to be dealt
with differently.

So just to say you have a "fiberglass fabrication shop" doesn't provide
enough info.

We had resin spray booths, materials storage including flammable liquids,
finished product storage (racks), grinding and finishing (lots of dust),
pallet storage, just as an overview.

depending on the quantity and type of hardeners
(e.g. epoxies) you may have a H-area.
