NFPA 13, 2007 does define compartments in 3.3.5. I would think in order to meet
the 55 sqft or less it would be per compartment. With that being the case I
would also think that the thermal barrier would have to be per compartment as
well. I am pretty sure the "full height shower/tub enclosure" was part of the
1999 edition and has since been removed (as it is not mentioned in 2002 and
2007). That would mean that you are required to include the sqft of the
tub/shower in the total for the bathroom regardless. I would say based on your
information that the sink/shower room will require a sprinkler and the toilet
room can be omitted, provided you have the thermal barrier all the way around
the toilet room.

thanks Eric, bathroom in hotel room 13-2007. I have 87 ft2 overall bathroom,
broken up into 3 compartments: 24 ft2 shower enclosure floor to wall, 47 ft2
with a sink, and 16 ft2 with toilet. If the thermal barrier is between a
bathroom and a non bathroom, I think no sprinklers required, as we have the
typical metal stud and gyp walls between these 3 bathrooms and the non-bathroom
spaces.

I would assume you are referencing NFPA 13R, 2002 edition. In the 2007 edition
the requirement for the thermal barrier has been removed.

2002 edition, section 6.8.2 - thermal barrier required.
2007 edition, section 6.9.2 - not required

Subject: thermal barrier

I searched the archives and found:

"The thermal barrier is between the bathroom and the adjacent space".

The statement was made by Mr. Craig L. Prahl.

Craig (or any other helpful forumite), is their a code I can reference to back
the statement up?

many thanks,
