Gas is also a one shot and it's over scenario. Even where gas is the
primary protection for a piece of equipment (what it's designed for, hence
the "Special Hazards" monicker) there's a sprinkler system in case 1. the
gas system fails to extinguisher the fire altogether, 2. can't provide long
term control (which it can't just by its nature), or 3, knocks down a fire
but it rekindles. Just as the sprinkler design performance criterion is to
control a fire so it doesn't spread beyond it's design area until the FD
can get on scene to provide final suppression and overhaul, a gas system is
designed to (hopefully) extinguish a fire in, on or around a piece of high
value equipment that could be damaged by water, before the sprinkler system
activates.
