Scenario - a 2 story building

There is a vertical tire carousel that goes through a mezzanine – hole
sized at 6’-4 x approx. 17’ which sits in the corner of the storage area
(general car parts) – to the 2nd floor. – The entire height of the carousel
is 18-7” from the ground level.

If we were to place a row of sprinklers along the wall (nothing above them
all the way to the 2nd floor ceiling) and then on the opposite side under
the mezzanine, could we in effect comply with NFPA #13 2007 ed - Table
18.4(a) (6) - for one row of in rack sprinklers so we could calculate the
system on the 2nd floor at .40 gpm?

This is a strange deal to me because it would seem like overkill to have a
.90 density to protect such a small area and then increase it by 15’-0 on
the 2 sides as required.

Thanks for your help
