Tony, Not required by NFPA 13, as it has no roof, assuming that it is not sitting under a combustible roof overhang;
but that does not mean it is a good idea to have a garbage enclosure next the building. I was involved with a fire in a compactor attached to a mercantile No sprinklers in the compactor, as it is a piece of equipment on the exterior of the building. Smoke damage caused a loss estimated at $1 million (actual loss unknown).
