I believe I know what jurisdiction Ron F is talking about. I have explained to their reviewers that per the IFC that they have adopted, bracing is not required in Seismic Design Category A/B. I ask for a reference as to where it is required. I get pointed to Chap 9 of NFPA 13. I get told that this is the way we do it and it has to be done this way or it won't get approved. After awhile, your head gets flat from beating it against the wall so much and you just comply.

Ron,

Curious ... " because they can..." Does that mean that they have a local
amendment, are using the IFC catchall that they can do what they think ( appendix clearly
shows that wasn't intent but is used as a hammer) or does it mean it isn't worth the
fight because you may win the battle in court but lose the war for the next 20 years you
work in their area?

They make us install sway braces in a non-seismic zone because they can. We ask
if they want calc's and the answer is what calc's? Were just trying to get by.
We also put $5k worth of overfill protection on a 180 gallon diesel fuel tank
in a pump room, because they make us. Pretty hard to justify either one.

Drive screws? Lags are no longer allowed because they pull out. Drive screws
are ... negligent, arguably.

Forest - all I can say about your spacing template is that it's five editions
old and any BO that accepts it isn't doing the due diligence.

We have jurisdictions in AZ that require what we call "feel good bracing". No
calc's required, use drive screws to attach brace from 8" pipe to wood 2x6 at the roof. A
little different from the hoops we jump through for OSHPAD in CA.

That doesn't work in seismic zones Forest. That's sway bracing, not seismic
bracing.

These guidelines will satisfy most building departments.

What are the best "Keep It Simple Stupid" resources for seismic
applications?

And, ... is EQ bracing limited to only those floors above grade?
