Tim,
Ron is correct about the residential tank - NFPA-22 does not apply to 13-D
systems.
As for the limits on tank materials, it is true that sec. 4.4 limits materials
to steel, wood, concrete, coated fabrics, and fiberglass-reinforced plastic.
However, there is always the equivalency clause in 1.4. The AHJ can approve a
tank that can be shown to have equivalency in quality strength, fire
resistance, effectiveness, durability and safety. Someone just has to provide
the documentation to the AHJ for their approval.
My opinion only and not an official position of the NFPA-22 Technical Committee.

Subject: Polyethylene Tanks
Are there any requirements in NFPA 22 not allowing the use of Polyethylene
water storage tanks for residential or commercial sprinkler systems? These
tanks are installed above ground usually in Basements.
The local State agency is getting ready to adopt the 2013 edition of NFPA 22
and I am being told NFPA 22 only permits Fiberglass. I don't see where
Polyethylene is excluded.
Thoughts please.
