For the next (2016) edition I filed a Public Input asking for the 18
minimum be dropped and for the S dimension to be changed to 1/2 S. As per
the First Draft Report, that was accepted, but of course it is susceptible
to change during the Second round of deliberations. Larry Keeping, P.Eng

Subject: Re: 38" wide soffit along wall

Jeff, one (an AHJ, not me) could argue that this figure doesn't apply since
there's already figure 8.6.5.1.2(c)

I personally feel that the difference between the soffit that goes all the
way up (as in 8.6.5.1.2c) vs the one shown in A.8.6.5.1.2 is ridiculous, but
at the end of the day, the latter is only in the appendix, not the main body
of the code.

Fire sprinklers save lives. Can you live without them?

Subject: 38" wide soffit along wall

I thought I knew the answer to this one, but now having second thoughts

21'-6" to roof deck, Light Hazard, 38" wide soffit along a wall @ 8'-2"
above the floor.

Do we need sprinklers under the soffit?

1st thought was no, because it is less than 48" wide, but then looking @
NFPA #13 - 2016, 8.6.5.1 and 8.6.5.2, it looks like we "will need" heads
under the soffit.

It is not like something 38" wide sitting out in the middle of a room where
a pattern could develop around the obstruction from different areas. The
edge of this soffit goes to the roof deck, so no pattern can develop around
it.

Thoughts?
