That's what I was alluding to and in the past 6-7 years this has been my
experience exclusively. Automation = efficiency and the accountability that
you describe. I've been in 500K-1MM sq. ft. buildings that are so clean you
could literally eat food off the floor. I guess it's relative though and the
letter of the code says that you have to account for obstructions. These are
described as 30" AFF so I'm not sweatin' it, but most of the buildings we've
worked on have mezzanines and elevation changes where belts angle up and down.
Still, with sprinkler protection under platforms and ESFR overhead, the
"obstruction" potentially posed by 24" conveyors on the floor is effectively
nonexistent.

[Tangent Alert] With regard to common sense, for most of these large
fulfillment centers their entire livelihood is based upon knowing exactly where
every package/product is at all times. What is the likelihood that they would
just throw a few packages under the conveyor, or let debris accumulate? I
realize that this isn't addressed in the code, but it should be considered when
you're talking about the prospect of adding hundreds of sprinklers under small,
floor-mounted conveyors. In most cases 99.9% of those sprinklers spend their
lives protecting concrete.

Same section number. Plus there's no storage below. And common sense.

24" wide

AHJ is looking for something in NFPA or FM Global that states that

they do not require protection

Oops - they're not 30" wide, they're 30" AFF. So how wide are they? I've
worked on some giant FC projects but the conveyors weren't 48" in any case.

Considering that the fire load that we want to protect is being conveyed with
full exposure to sprinklers above, and it's not practical in distribution and
fulfillment center operations to store combustibles under such belt systems, I
can't imagine why you'd need sprinklers below a 30" conveyor even if it wasn't
open.

Here is my question:

ESFR Systems that have some roller conveyors at 30" AFF that the the opening
between rollers

is over 50% do they require sprinkler protection under them?

It use to be that they were not required to be protected!

Thanks,
