Thank you, Todd. Those were my thoughts as well. I just got word from the
contractor that the local and state fire marshal is getting involved and
indications are that they will agree with our interpretation that the
sprinklers are needed.

Subject: Re: Concealed Space

Remember, the Appendix is not part of the standard, unless the appendices are
specifically brought in by the Code.

That section is purposely vague because the term “limited combustible” is open
to interpretation since each situation is different. That needs to be an
agreement between the Engineer of Record and the local AHJ as to what applies
in each situation.

You could also argue that the wood studs are indeed structural since the
Sheetrock won’t stand up on its own. Something can be structural without being
considered load bearing.

I have a project that has a concealed space with exposed wood wall framing. I
added concealed space sprinklers per 8.15.1.2.1. The engineer is telling me to
remove them stating that, since the walls are not load bearing, they are not
structural walls. He then references Appendix A for 8.15.1.2.1 that states the
requirements to protect the space does not apply for "nonstructural" wood. Has
anyone seen this before? What is the opinion of the Forum?

I will, of course, defer to the engineer, but I am recommending that the
contractor I'm working with get a letter from the engineer clearly stating that
they are requesting the sprinkler not be installed.
