Thank you, Bob. I didn't consider that. I'll look into and throw it in the
mix. It may be something the stakeholders would buy into. Their concern is
not being able to access the concealed sprinklers for maintenance. If we kept
the sprinkler localized to only the area with exposed framing, that area has a
acoustic tile ceiling.

Subject: RE: Concealed Space

Micah,

This sounds like a situation where using the “Localized Protection of Exposed
Combustible Construction or Exposed Combustibles” might be appropriate.
8.15.1.5 (13 ed):

If the exposed combustibles are in the vertical partitions or walls around all
or a portion of the enclosure, a singlerow of sprinklers spaced not over 12 ft
apart nor more than 6 ft from the inside of the partition

shall be permitted to protect the surface. The first and last sprinklers in
such a row shall not be over 5 ft from the ends of the partitions.

In this scenario you would only provide sprinklers along the exposed walls.
Based on what you have described, my opinion is that sprinklers are required in
at least a localized manner.

Thank you,

Bob Knight, CET III

Subject: Concealed Space

I have a project that has a concealed space with exposed wood wall framing. I
added concealed space sprinklers per 8.15.1.2.1. The engineer is telling me to
remove them stating that, since the walls are not load bearing, they are not
structural walls. He then references Appendix A for 8.15.1.2.1 that states the
requirements to protect the space does not apply for "nonstructural" wood. Has
anyone seen this before? What is the opinion of the Forum?

I will, of course, defer to the engineer, but I am recommending that the
contractor I'm working with get a letter from the engineer clearly stating that
they are requesting the sprinkler not be installed.
