For spacing it would be nice if instead of "L" and whatever that other one is and words like perpendicular we used x-y coordinates.
Deflector distance could be z...
It's a 3D world afterall.

This was actually my mindset. And perhaps misplaced concern. Do I have to match surrounding sprinklers to accommodate a door? Maybe I’m overthinking it?

Maybe not the same scenario as the OP, but related: What about 8.12.2.2.3 (2)? It says:

“Adjacent branch lines shall maintain the same pattern”

Might not apply here since it only applies if you are deviating from the maximum spacing to eliminate an obstruction, but what is the intent/purpose behind it?

It’s been done forever with spray sprinklers and we’ve recommended it many times as an effort to reach the 8 ft separation. Unfortunately, the only guidance we have is in 8.5.2 Protection Areas per Sprinkler. The problem is that L dimension is defined as the PERPENDICULAR distance to the SPRINKLER on the adjacent branch line. I tried to correct this and the TC didn’t like saying the perpendicular distance to the adjacent branch line. I don't remember the exact excuse but they are slow about accepting change to their text. Since not all systems are laid out in perfect symmetry (AND NOT REQUIRED TO BE), this philosophy is not intended to negate staggering the layout.

Fire Sprinklers Saves Lives

I need to move a row of ESFR to make room for a door that the ARCH is adamant about keeping. Can I stagger the spacing (space them at 8’-0” in lieu of the current 10’-0”) on the one line effected as long as I don’t exceed the maximum or minimum spacing of the sprinklers? Do I have to match that spacing / layout with the other lines?

Just double checking myself.
