That makes sense. I think I was kind of confusing the term “hydraulic design 
basis” with the hazard category.



So, if you have a light hazard occupancy, with a small mechanical room or 
storage closet that is considered ordinary hazard, that wouldn’t in any way 
preclude you from using QR reduction, right? Per Travis’s answer, they are both 
density/area method and thus fall into the same “hydraulic design basis”. Is 
that right?

Yeah, in simple terms, hydraulic design basis is the discharge criteria.   So 
if you are using QR sprinklers in a portion of a building that has mixed uses – 
say you’re considering the office area (LH) of an industrial building that also 
has higher hazard fire areas, you can take the area reduction in the offices 
where that basis of design is applied.
