That depends on the state that you’re in, or at least whether or not you’re in CA. NFPA 13 allows area reduction for QR in LH and OH occupancies but California does NOT allow for OH. Not sure if any other states have amended this provision but assuming you’re not in CA, then I agree that accessory OH wouldn’t preclude using QR sprinklers.

I think I was kind of confusing the term “hydraulic design basis” with the hazard category. So, if you have a light hazard occupancy, with a small mechanical room or storage closet that is considered ordinary hazard, that wouldn’t in any way preclude you from using QR reduction, right? Per Travis’s answer, they are both density/area method and thus fall into the same “hydraulic design basis”. Is that right? -Kyle M From: Sprinklerforum [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Steve Leyton Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2019 8:47 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [EXTERNAL] RE: QR Reduction - Question about wording of code Yeah, in simple terms, hydraulic design basis is the discharge criteria. So if you are using QR sprinklers in a portion of a building that has mixed uses – say you’re considering the office area (LH) of an industrial building that also has higher hazard fire areas, you can take the area reduction in the offices where that basis of design is applied.
