Steve is correct, however while NFPA 13 requires only five flowing QR
sprinklers in the reduced remote area California requires a minimum of
seven.

That depends on the state that you’re in, or at least whether or not
you’re in CA. NFPA 13 allows area reduction for QR in LH and OH
occupancies but California does NOT allow for OH. Not sure if any
other states have amended this provision but assuming you’re not in
CA, then I agree that accessory OH wouldn’t preclude using QR sprinklers.

Travis and Steve,
That makes sense. I think I was kind of confusing the term “hydraulic
design basis” with the hazard category.
So, if you have a light hazard occupancy, with a small mechanical room
or storage closet that is considered ordinary hazard, that wouldn’t in
any way preclude you from using QR reduction, right? Per Travis’s
answer, they are both density/area method and thus fall into the same
“hydraulic design basis”. Is that right?

Yeah, in simple terms, hydraulic design basis is the discharge
criteria. So if you are using QR sprinklers in a portion of a building
that has mixed uses – say you’re considering the office area (LH) of
an industrial building that also has higher hazard fire areas, you can
take the area reduction in the offices where that basis of design is
applied.

All,
What is the intention of the highlighted wording in the code section
below:
What is it prohibiting us from doing, if anything?
