I have no idea what the origins were but I recall many years ago being told to
figure the weight of 500 Gallons of water (500 x 8 lbs= 4000 lbs) times a
factor of 1.25 for pipe and fittings which would give you 5000 lbs. I'm
guessing the formula came from the NFPA 13 500 gallon limit per system for Dry
Pipe Systems and the 1.25 was a factor used for old Pipe Schedule Systems.
You could easily figure a basic system out based on the weight of the water
plus the weight of the pipe from ASME tables.
