One thought about the default setting:

Would you think for IPython QtConsole, the Automatic figure would be better 
than the Inline? The reason for that is:

1) Matlab used a pop-out figure, which is what matplotlib originally set 
out to mimic;
2) For a scientific use, the interactive plotting is very often used;
3) For a scientific publication, the ppi needs to be >= 300. And as a 
consequence, inline figure with ppi >= 300 will be too large to fit in the 
window.
