Yes yes. Hence the recent rash of people on this list who can't dry- run their software, don't understand what an index is, have no appreciation of how to guess him much work a computer is doing, etc.. This is a big problem in the industry in general: they teach you how to declare an index without explaining why or what kind of index will help you. I keep wanting to scream "If you don't grok the need you shouldn't be a programmer to start with.". But it's not their fault, it's their bosses' fault.
