I have three copies of my library. The first is the master, which
contains all my music. It is the original destination for all files
whether ripped or downloaded, organized in folders by Artist / Album. It
contains both lossless and lossy files. It resides on a hard drive in
my main computer.

A duplicate of this archive is copied to my music server, to which LMS
is pointed.

The third is a lossy version, with straight copies of the lossy files
from the master, plus lossy versions of my lossless files. I use this as
the source for portable media.

After the initial rip of my CD collection some years ago, this is my
routine.

When I download a lossy album from places like iTunes or eMusic it goes
first to the master archive and then is copied to both the LMS and lossy
archives.

When I download a lossless album from places like CDBaby or Bandcamp it
goes to the master archive, and then gets converted to 320 MP3, with the
converted version going to the lossy archive.

When I get a new CD I use dBpoweramp to rip it, with three copies
created automatically. One lossless file goes to he master archive, one
to the LMS library, and a 320 mp3 to the lossy archive.

I find it more convenient to maintain separate lossy and lossless
archives. Since I have many files only in lossy versions, it's not
convenient to use the differentiating function in 7.9 -- pointing LMS
only to lossless files would miss a quarter or so of my library.
