I am running LMS on a really old (2005) Mac Mini. Amazingly, it seems to
run great and has been very reliable. One minor annoyance is that it
prompts to update LMS right after you boot. But when you say, "OK" to go
ahead and update nothing happens.

Head over to http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/index.php?ver=7.7 and grab the latest 7.7.6 build. One issue it fixes is the failing update notification. Hopefully :-).

I think I am running LMS 7.7.2. The
Mac Mini is running Mac OS 10.4.

Is it Intel based or PowerPC?

Incidentally, this Mac Mini only has 512M of Ram. All Musc is stored on
an external USB drive. I was hoping to upgrade the internal hard disk to
a 256M SSD that I have laying around but the Mac HDD is the old ATA
style interface! Guess my upgrade options are a bit limited in this
case!

If you're going to open up that box to install an SSD, don't forget to add a few gigabytes of memory, too. The whole SSD advantage would be lost due to lack of memory.

Anyway, I am not sure I care if I upgrade LMS since the version I have
now works OK. Is there any way I can get LMS to stop checking for an
update? Alternatively, are there any compelling reasons t update LMS?

Never touch a running system... check Settings/Advanced/Software updates. Make sure it's all turned off. Then stop LMS. Go to ~/Library/Caches/Squeezebox and delete the Updates sub-folder. That should take care of the update notification.

But yes, there are good reasons to update. But they probably don't apply to you:

- if you're using Spotify and/or Napster/Rhapsody, then you should update, as we had to fix a few issues there

- LMS 7.9 has a few nice improvements like virtual libraries (library views), playing files without scanning them first, new browse modes, performance improvements (would require a bit more memory than you have :-))

Check out http://goo.gl/zfz2sn for yourself. It's up to you whether any of those changes are worth the potential hassle of an update.
