So, how do I go about fully removing LMS and all it's components, settings and so forth, back to a fully 'clean' system from which to attempt a new install please? Is there a clean-up.exe type thing that will do this perhaps?
You're on Windows? Use the regular uninstaller. It should (optionaly) remove all prefs, caches etc.
