B) volumio 2.246 Distro (based on Rasbian) runs stable
Most likely the log folder being volatile is a Volumio specific customization of Raspbian. It's documented how to do this in many places, as people try to prevent wearing out the SD card. But it's not Raspbian default behaviour.
