Many thanks for the quick reply, as ever!

2 - the saved R4 MP3 stream that I sometimes use is <
http://open.live.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/5/select/mediaset/http-icy-mp3-a/format/pls/vpid/bbc_radio_fourfm.pls
>. Would that work, or do I need to edit it before trying?

4 - <Alarm Timeout> is set to 0 minutes, which is said to mean "never
stops playing". Is that the setting you mean? I also tried 90 minutes,
but with the same 0817 "fault".

BTW, after I opened the thread I noticed something a tad odd - maybe? -
in the WebUI. For the Radio I'm using as an alarm, the REPEAT icon was
blue. When I'm just playing various players, I always have REPEAT set
to OFF. Is the blueness of the icon activated by my alarm setting, or
had I somehow clicked on a troublesome repeat option?
