I tried it without itunes and it scanned to completion, so I'm guessing it's something in itunes library.xml.
I've deleted the LMS library and got itunes to produce a new itunes library. Time will tell, if this doesn't work I'll try cleaning out itunes completely rather than importing the old library for the last machine.
