I think it is looking in
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/Contents/server/Bin/darwin/
instead of darwin-x86_64 because it thinks that this is not an x86_64
machine.

Correct! I should probably make x86_64 the default, as other hardware hasn't been supported for a while now.

Anyway: I applied a few changes to LMS 8.1, which will hopefully make it pick up x86_64 helper binaries on Apple Silicon, too. Please give it a try (once it's built, which can take another hour or two).

Please note that I have not applied the "arch" fix in the startup script yet. You'll still have to apply this one yourself. But that would be next on the todo list.
