Since Alex has had some success, I decided to try again myself. I reviewed Roland's posts and made some changes along the lines he recommended, and then reinstalled the LMS 8.1.0 RPM (I had previously uninstalled it). Now I don't even get to square one, as the server does not attempt to start:
Failed to start squeezeboxserver.service: Unit squeezeboxserver.service not found.
