I agree it's better to use the system-specific tools, so here goes...
- The yast services manager did not list squeezeboxserver.
- I deleted logitechmediaserver using the software management tool.
- I then used zypper to install the rpm (in my case,
logitechmediaserver-8.1.0-0.1.1608064080.noarch.rpm, which is the
version I had on hand).
The package installed okay (except to complain that it was unsigned).
But then:

systemctl status squeezeboxserver.service
Unit squeezeboxserver.service could not be found.

As before, '/etc/init.d/squeezeboxserver start' also produces the same
result.
I assume that your system does not have any systemd unit files for
squeezeboxserver (should be in /usr/lib/systemd/system, I think), and is
still using the SysV init? I wonder what could be different about mine?
