I don;t know Squeezeplay on MacOS but for testing I'd advise using
Squeezelite instead  - it has more control and better logging so you get
better info on how audio data stream is being processed.

IIRC There are user who  are using SB3 to "play" DTS audio through the
SB3 digital connection to Receiver which decodes DTS into 5.1 audio.
This means SB3 has been shown to be able to transfer flac encapsulated
bit perfect bit streams from LMS to the digital output. SB3 can only
play a max of 48kHz so MQA files from 2L should be the MQA-CD ones and
not the MQA original resolution.

1. Get the player.source log to check that LMS has interpreted format
correctly, audio stream is being played direct to player and no audio
processing/transcoding is happening by accident. 
2. Make sure all "gain" and "fade" type settings for player are disabled
(although the 100% locked" setting should do this.
