@Jaca showed where the sync settings are in Material Skin. In case you
are using the default LMS settings, here's where they are. I prefer the
organization of the default LMS for settings, Material for everything
else.

I use sync all the time, I don't play with these much. Your behavior in
#1 is common for me, when I use the setting "power on/off separately".
I'll keep 3 players always synced, and then just power one on when I
want that player involved. There is always a period of mute before they
come back. #2 I have seen occasionally, but I just start em back up.

It's also important to understand with Group Players that it essentially
allows you to create a new player. So if I have players A and B, I can
create a new player A+B, so I now have 3 players, one virtual (the
group). Group Players is real cool, but I haven't explored it much. My
use case of always synced, power on off separately is perfect for me. I
don't mind the "join in" pause.

As @slarti mentioned, the sync master is the one that initiated the
sync. So if you are using, say a radio, and you navigate to
settings->advanced->sychronize and choose, say a touch, The radio is the
master. Honestly, I really don't pay attention to it that much.
