Thanks all for your help.

Yes, I would expect to always see the power on behaviour described by
redrum but in my experience playback sometimes comes to a complete stop
for no apparent reason when a new player joins. I use the YouTube plugin
quite a lot and if you are in the middle of a long track or a playlist
of tracks and the problem happens, it's then quite challenging to find
your way back manually to the playback position you were at. (and I
don't think the resume playback position the developer added works for
this scenario) For streaming radio stations it's easier...you just just
hit play to get things going again.

Having said that, I'm not sure why but for the moment it looks like
installing the Group Players plugin as recommended by Jaca may have
resolved it. I've tried powering off random synced players (master or
slave) and then turning them back on and so far playback has resumed ok.
I think I've noticed the problem happening after powering on a device
which I haven't used for several days or weeks...so I'll keep you
posted.

I found the Power On Resume setting...thanks to those who explained how
to get to it. All my players are set to "Pause at power off / Resume at
power on". I think that's probably the right setting for the behaviour I
want.

One (I think new?) feature I like in Group Players' virtual player is
the global volume...you can set invidual players to a given volume and
the global volume adjustment maintains those relative volume
differences. Useful!

PS: From my windows PC I use Material skin on the LMS web inferface but
(Jaca) on android I use "Squeeze Ctrl" rather than "Squeeze Commander".
I imagine they have similar features.
