Ok, I'm still trying.
I remembered that I also had another pugin called "SyncOptions" enabled. I have now turned off both "SyncOptions" and "Group Players" and also the "Persistent" Https streaming mode...so I believe I'm now only using the built-in synchronising features. When it works, powering on a device synchronises and plays automatically again but behaviour #2 still happens now and then...so I'm back to square one really. I think it may be a bug. If anyone can give me some pointers on how to further analyse this (log files?), I'd be happy to do that.
