I agree. You don't SM 1.4.3a to be packaged in a deb file to install it. The only use I see for the deb package is for apt and to put sm 1.4.3a on a CD with a bunch of packages. Just extract the squirrelmail-1.4.3a.tar.gz contents to a servable directory of your choice and use config.pl to set it up. I have personal tried this on Debian and it works fine.
