Sam hasn't responded to any bug in 3 months. A friend of mine is Debian Developer, and when I described the problem to him he contacted Sam to propose to co-maintain the SquirrelMail package and to "downgrade" it to the 1.4.x series. Since the release of sarge is quite near (this summer), it's very wise to get a good version of SquirrelMail in now. I hope Sam accepts the offer, I know this debian developer well and I see him regularly which helps in keeping contact between Debian and "upstream".
