Well it sounds like you don't have the appropriate permissions on cgi-bin or
something like that...
In any case, sqwebmail needs mail to be delivered to Maildirs. You must have
a Maildir in each user's home directory. (Sqwebmail provides the maildirmake
command to build these. If you run it as root MAKE SURE TO CHANGE THE
OWNERSHIP OF THE MAILDIR AND ITS SUBDIRECTORIES!) If you're using sendmail
and pine, and don't want to run all the pop-related stuff, I _think_ you're
out of luck. Also, I freely admit that I don't understand sendmail, but if
there's a way to make it deliver to maildirs, I don't know what it is...
I think if I were you, and I really wanted to use sqwebmail, I would
a)deinstall the sqwebmail port
b)deinstall any software you've installed related to it
c)use the postfix (or qmail) port to replace sendmail (read all the READMEs)
Make sure to configure it for Maildir delivery. The option is preset in the
config file but commented out, so it's very convenient.
d)download the sqwebmail source from sourceforge.net
e)carefully read Mr.Sam's INSTALL file
f)configure sqwebmail exactly the way I wanted it. I like the authpam module
with FBSD.
g)make and make install
h)tweak HTML
DISCLAIMER Take it all with a grain of salt. There are others in the list
far more expert than I; if they chime in, listen to them.
Of course, if you want to continue using Pine, this may present a problem
for you. But you can use the Courier-IMAP system to start up an IMAP mail
system that works quite well with Sqwebmail (which comes as part of Courier
I believe). If you get that going, you should be able to use any IMAP mail
client in addition to Sqwebmail. I still prefer just using Sqwebmail (for
family members) and Mutt myself...
