couple of questions on that line since this is not a "new" installation and
would suspect that a bad ownership situation would have reared its head much
earlier than this...

1) where is the login cache directory?
2) what uid/gid should it be with a default installation?
3) why would this be an intermittant problem?  Only showed up recently, last few
days, and have many users using the system yet not generating errors all the
time.
4) what operation or action causes use of the login cache?

Apprecate any insight.
